Blue Ridge Parkway is approximately 1 mile via Phillips Gap access. New River for canoeing/kayaking is down 1 mile on Pine Swamp, then Conley Cheek Road. Both Boone and West Jefferson are about 20 minutes away for dining and entertainment; skiing also (in season) is further past Boone.
